Clovelly, Sydney
Clovellyocean channel
The concrete-sided ocean bay worth leaving the Bondi to Coogee walk for — protected blue water, hard edges, rock shelves and a swim break that changes the pace of the day.
Concrete sides · Pacific centre · coastal-walk pause
Where you are
Between the surf and the next cove.
Why Clovelly is different
Not a beach. Not a pool. Something better between.
Clovelly Beach feels engineered by the coast itself and then sharpened by Sydney. The sand is small. The bay is long and narrow. Concrete promenades run along both sides, bringing swimmers, walkers and sun-seekers right to the water.
You do not come here for big surf. You come for the protected ocean channel, the rock platforms, the easy entries and the feeling of swimming inside a blue cut in the sandstone coast.
How to swim Clovelly
Concrete edges, Pacific water, one clean line through the bay.
Quick dip
Use the promenades and steps when conditions suit. The water is close, the entry is direct, and you can be back on the walk in minutes.
Longer line
Swim the length of the bay when the water is calm and clear. Stay aware of other swimmers, changing swell and local guidance.
Sit it out
The concrete edges and rock platforms make Clovelly easy to enjoy without getting wet. Choose a spot and watch the bay move.
Check conditions: Clovelly is calmer than many nearby surf beaches, but it is still ocean water. Watch swell, signage, patrol advice and slippery rock edges.
Bondi to Coogee walk
The smartest pause between Bronte and Coogee.
If you are walking south, Clovelly is the moment to slow down. Bronte gives you surf and parkland. Gordons Bay gives you rocks and clear water. Clovelly gives you the rare middle point: protected ocean swimming, places to sit, and food nearby without turning the day into a detour.
What to notice
Arrive looking for the shape of the place.
Hard edges are part of the identity. They make the bay graphic, immediate and unmistakably local.
There is sand, but it is not the main event. At Clovelly, the swim channel defines the experience.
Gordons Bay is close enough that Clovelly becomes one chapter in a run of very different coastal places.
Eat + drink nearby
Where to go when the swim turns into lunch.
Clovelly works because the swim is close to the street. Keep it simple with coffee near the beach, head to the pub for a longer meal, or walk up Clovelly Road for takeaway.
Seasalt Cafe
A close-to-the-beach option for coffee, breakfast or a low-effort post-swim pause.
Surf club kiosk
Useful for straightforward food and drinks when you are staying by the bay.
Clovelly Hotel
The classic nearby pub choice when a quick dip becomes lunch, dinner or a longer afternoon.
Out of the Blue
A Clovelly Road name to know when you want something casual before heading home.
Eastern Suburbs map
Bronte is north. Gordons Bay and Coogee are south. Randwick and Waverley pull the beach back into everyday Eastern Suburbs life.

Should you stop?
Go for the shape.
Stay for the water.
Sydney has bigger beaches, louder beaches and longer beaches. Clovelly’s pull is more precise: a protected blue gully, concrete edges, rock shelves and the rare feeling of swimming in the ocean without surrendering to the surf.
